Alessandro Volpato, a biologist who trains people to make materials from fungi, led a one-day workshop in microbiology and mycology (the study of fungi) with Cris Silva, who ran the Bio Lab.
The stated aim was to build a community around biotechnology research once the lab was set up, so that the lab served more than a few people.
The academy’s work with mycelium, the root-like threads a fungus grows, starts here. It leads to the biomaterials sessions at Dinacon four months later and, in the years after, to a mycelium biocomposite: a material made by growing mycelium through other matter.
