iGEM 2020, gold medal for a rice biosensor

A joint team won gold at the international synthetic-biology competition for a biosensor for a fungus that destroys 40 per cent of stored rice.

A joint team won a gold medal at iGEM, the international synthetic-biology competition, in November 2020. Their biosensor detects Aspergillus, a fungus that destroys around 40 per cent of rice grains in storage after harvest in Sri Lanka.

Eight undergraduates from the Kumoh National Institute of Technology in Korea worked with the academy on the project, called “Save Our Rice Anywhere”.

The biosensor won a gold medal. It has not been deployed, and nobody’s harvest depends on it.
