DreamSpace Academy started in Batticaloa on 30 September 2018.

It grew out of the Sagacious Youth Lead Consortium, which had run since 2013, and out of work done under the DreamSpace name from around 2015. Those dates mark earlier work. They are not alternative founding dates.

BOOKBRIDGE helped the academy get started. Its support had three parts:

  • a short structured programme that ended in a pitch;
  • a loan on easy terms (a soft loan), not a grant;
  • a centre set up as a social enterprise, run by a local entrepreneur who then owned it.

The record shows 147 individuals engaged in the first year. The earliest partners were BOOKBRIDGE, UN Volunteers, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Sri Lanka, the Centre for Peacebuilding and Reconciliation, and OpenEdge.
